Just in time for the holiday season, the Texas based movie theater chain Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is opening up a new location in Gilbert on December 3rd. Since 1997, Alamo Drafthouse has given movie goers and popcorn lovers the perfect theater experience with a full bar and food service inside the theater.
What separates Alamo Drafthouse from other dine-in movie theaters such as Movie Tavern or Studio Movie Grill is that Alamo is reservation only. In total, the chain has over 40 locations throughout the country and this will be the third location in the Valley.
According to the Alamo Drafthouse website, the Gilbert location will have 8 screens each accoutered with Sony 4K laser projection for, “new release movies, family and independent films” plus additional repertory programming unique to Alamo.
Dinner at the movies
Gone are the days of getting ‘dinner and a movie,’ at the Alamo Drafthouse you get dinner at the movies. In addition to all the classic movie time treats like popcorn, you can also chow down on snacks like wings, fried pickles, baked pretzels, and avocado toast. For the more pretentious popped corn enthusiasts, Drafthouse also offers truffle parmesan popcorn.
If you’re trying to keep it healthy then Alamo has something for you too with a selection of salads including a baby kale caesar, greek chicken, colorado chicken, and an antipasti salad.
Other entree menu items include: 2×2 burgers, grilled 6-cheese sandwich, a fried chicken sandwich, chicken tenders, fish and chips, and quinoa bowls as well as a variety of pizzas. There is also a brunch menu which boasts of items like breakfast tacos, caramel creme brulee french toast, and bloody marys for days.
If you have a sweet tooth, don’t worry, they have cookies, donuts, and specialty shakes on the menu as well.
There’s a reason it’s called Drafthouse
As their website says, there’s a reason that ‘drafthouse’ is in the name. Along with a zeal for cinema, Alamo also has a passion for brews. In addition to being able to get beer delivered to you right inside the theater, ADC also has a standalone bar in the lobby with over 30 local and regional craft beers including the Alamo Amber, brewed in Tempe. Guests may either enjoy their drinks and apps at the lobby bar or in their seats as they enjoy a specially curated programming of shorts and cartoons before the film.
Along with craft beers, the Gilbert Drafthouse will also feature a selection of bottled beers, hand crafted cocktails, and a variety of spirits and wine.
The specialty cocktails are sorted by rating with a margarita rated G, victory at sea rated PG, truth serum rated PG-13, and a bourbon’s foster rated R. There are no NC-17 cocktails, but as always, all alcoholic beverages are NC-21.
What to look forward to
The new ADC will follow a 100% reserved seating policy, with each seat being an oversized recliner.
Keep in mind, Alamo Drafthouse is geared toward adults. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The target audience are serious film fans. The theater follows a strict no-texting-no-talking policy and violators will be asked to leave the theater. Also, once the film has begun there will be no late seating, so be sure to arrive early to give yourself plenty of time to get your food and drinks.
Opening the new Gilbert locations right at the start of the holiday season was no accident, Drafthouse is hosting a variety of holiday screenings for both families and adults only. Among the ‘family friendly’ parties, Alamo is doing a screening of Elf on December 3nd complete with props and elf hats to make the most of the experience. There will be encore parties for Elf throughout the month.
On the 5th and 7th there will be A Christmas Story watch party for families and on the 7th and 8th a Polar Express party.
Movie parties for adults only include screenings of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation on the 16th, 17th, and 18th. Then on the 7th adults are invited to attend the ‘Champagne Cinema’ screening of Love Actually. Other adult holiday movie screening parties will show Gremlins and Scrooged.
While this is the third location in the East Valley, in a phone interview with ABC 15, the company’s operating partner for Alamo Phoenix said they currently have their eyes set on future expansions into the West Valley and even in Central Phoenix. “We definitely have plans to go to the west side,” he said.
The new Alamo Drafthouse is located at 5478 South Power Road, Gilbert.
