Larry had this to say in a statement, “I have a special place in my heart for the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, and I have a great deal of respect of Robert.” The Phoenix Suns’ organization stated that, “He has become a dear friend and trusted confidante. He is a big part of why I am making this commitment.”
Fitzgerald and Suns team owner Robert Sarver have been close for years and have even sat together for several games this season. The news of Fitzgerald joining the Suns ownership group has been circulating for months as he’s reportedly sat in on interviews with the Suns involving a front-office move last April.
Robert Sarver (owner of the team) said the following, “Larry has been a great ambassador for our organization for years. He is an Arizona icon and a businessman, passionate philanthropist, and leader. He brings a unique perspective from outside basketball but still grounded in sport, and we welcome him as a valued partner and investor.”
Fitzgerald has had Suns season tickets since 2005. With him returning for his 17th NBA season, the 36-year-old Fitzgerald will still put most of his athletic efforts into the Cardinals, but expect that to change once he retires from the NFL. He recently signed onto another year with the Arizona Cardinals for the 2020 NFL season and is currently expected to retire soon from the NFL.
