Rarely in business is being too popular a bad thing. Yet sadly for coffee lovers in the downtown area, the always busy Dutch Bros coffee on Camelback and Central will be closing. Monday morning Dutch Bros announced that the store would officially be closing its doors on December 28th.
This development has been months in the making as Dutch Bros had been in negotiations with the city of Phoenix and the area locals. The reason for the closure is because the location was simply too popular causing traffic concerns and creating problems with accessibility and parking.
Previously, Dutch Bros proposed moving to a new location on Camelback and 3rd ave earlier this year. That proposal, however, was met with push back among the local community. As a result, last month the company scrapped the plans to move to that location. Current plans are underway to build a new larger location nearby, but specific details have not been released.
Dutch Bros reached an agreement with the city and area businesses earlier this year allowing the location to remain open into March of 2020 provided that the new location had begun construction by the 28th. With no new location yet identified, the popular coffee drive-thru will have no option but to close on the 28th per the terms of their arrangement.
General Manager of Dutch Bros Phoenix said in a statement, “We’re working hard to get the new location up and running. We look forward to sharing details on that soon and reconnecting with our customers,” adding that “We’ll miss our customers when we close the W. Camelback location, but being a good neighbor is our priority right now.”
Future location up in the air

DB said it would have a better timeline once a yet-to-be-announced groundbreaking takes place.
In recent months locals have become increasingly unhappy with the coffee drive-thru, complaining of traffic build-up risking public safety. Reportedly the location closed the walk-up window to encourage more cars.
For the time being there is no set location for a new store to open. According to ABC 15 a company spokesperson says there is a “potential site for a new location,” but did not give a specific time frame. Dutch Bros says it will release more information once ground-breaking begins.
Where to go now?
In the meantime, for those who can’t live without their daily Dutch bros coffee, they will have to settle for the two closest nearby locations:
