A new island-themed water park and hotel is coming to Glendale. The city is playing host to the 2023 Super Bowl, and the Crystal Lagoons Island Resort is set to go in near the Westgate Entertainment District.
Last week, the Glendale City Council voted unanimously to approve the project, which includes the 11-acre water park, more than 600 hotel rooms, amusement park rides, a 4D theater and a fly theater, an aerobar (with food and drinks 130 feet in the air), and a massive helium balloon for aerial views of Phoenix at 400 feet.
After receiving the green light from city council, construction for Crystal Lagoons Island Resort is set to break ground near the end of this year, with the resort slated to open by October 2022. The resort, dining and retail areas are going to be near Loop 101 and Cardinals Way.
Because of the large water park aspect to the project, the Crystal Lagoons Island Resort hopes to not only draw visitors from the Super Bowl, but also hopes to become popular in hot summer months. The area is popular during spring training and the Arizona Cardinals and Arizona Coyotes seasons, but a new attraction can bring more attention to the area at other times of the year.
The water park at Crystal Lagoons Island Resort will allow for guests to do more than simply swim. People can use non-motorized water equipment like paddleboards, boogie boards and snorkeling and scuba diving gear in pools of up to 10 feet in certain areas. There are talks about water jetpacks being used, as well. At Crystal Lagoons Island Resort, there will even be sandy beaches, completing the island look and feel of the water park.
The park hopes to attract locals and tourists, and have activities for people of all ages. The plan is to have water and light shows (like those seen at Disneyland and California Adventure), and use the other resort features to keep people busy all day long with immersive activities.
The company behind the project – Crystal Lagoons – has other entertainment-district water park developments around the world, but none in the U.S. Their U.S. properties are mostly within master-planned communities, like the pools and water features with Crystal Lagoons technology in Florida and Texas.
In addition to the resort, additional shopping and dining options will have space, so the entertainment options around the Westgate Entertainment District are growing.
With all of the attractions, shopping and dining the new resort will bring, it is estimated that the resort will bring about 1,800 jobs to Glendale.
