Movie fans in the Valley of the Sun will have more places to enjoy new movies on the big screen. There are three new theaters coming to Arizona soon, with two being chains new to the area and another is being rebranded.
Newly Announced Movie Theaters
California-based Landmark Theatres will open in the fall at Scottsdale Quarter. It will take over the building that used to hold IPIC Theatre, which closed in January 2020. Landmark will feature 8 auditoriums and have a range of movies — including traditional, independent, foreign and 3D films. This will be their first location in Arizona.
Touchstar Cinemas, based out of Orlando, Florida, will be opening at the Sonora Village shopping center, near Loop 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard in Scottsdale. It will be in the building that used to hold Studio Movie Grill, which closed during the pandemic. An opening date has not yet been announced.
The three Alamo Drafthouse theaters in Chandler, Gilbert, and Tempe will soon become Majestic Theaters. The theater chain and local franchise owners reached a settlement to part ways, and the theaters are being rebranded. Majestic representatives said the transition will happen in September, but all three theaters are still open under the Alamo name. The only thing changing is the name — staff, management, and the experience are going to remain the same.
Other Potential Theater Openings
The pandemic delayed the announced Harkins location in Laveen, but the timeline is unclear even though they said they still plan to open the location.
However, earlier this year, Harkins said it would close its North Valley 16 movie theater in north Phoenix by the end of the year. They also teased an announcement that they plan to open a new theater nearby. Specifics of those plans have not been announced.
