For years Phoenix has been expanding its nightlife scene in the downtown area. Just 20 years ago Phoenix was considered by many to be simply a vast oasis of sand and cacti with the occasional tumbleweed drifting by. Nowadays however, the Phoenix nightlife scene has exploded into a lively haven of partying. Especially just in the past two years, the whole downtown Phoenix area has been completely revitalized compared to what it was years ago. Now the downtown area offers plethora of different things to do for both locals and visitors. Along with the many clubs, restaurants, and new bars downtown Phoenix already has to offer, now a new bar in Phoenix has entered the scene. Earlier this week, Killer Whale Sex Club opened up at its prominent location right in Roosevelt Row.
Just by the name alone, this new bar in Phoenix promises to be a great time to all who enter. Yet despite the instant attention grabbing name of the bar, the owners ultimately said that the name has “absolutely no meaning” beyond being memorable. And memorable it is, not just in the name but even the building pops out from the street, sure to instantly peak the curiosity of those passing by. The building itself is located in the southwest corner of Roosevelt Row at the cross streets of Roosevelt and Sixth Street. The building resembles that of a bungalow style house and is painted turquoise green with a purple paisley print and yellow sun rays wrapped around the sides. As you walk in, you’ll also see a giant Pegasus painted on the side. If you’re going for the first time, good luck missing it. The new bar promises to be among the best new things to do in the city.
The bar has been in development for a while now, though as owner Sam Olguin told the Arizona Republic, not originally under the same name. Originally, Olguin and his business partner Brenon Stuart planned to call the bar Axiom. However, as the two changed the concept of the bar, they changed the name as well. Though Olguin noted, ultimately Killer Whale Sex Club, while entirely meaningless, is much more memorable. With a name like that, it’s hard to imagine people asking, “what was the name of that new bar in Phoenix again?”
Both Olguin and Stuart are not new to the bar scene either. The two also run So Far, So Good, a cocktail bar inside Churchill in downtown Phoenix. That bar opened up this past October and was one of the more than 40 new bars and restaurants to open up in downtown Phoenix this past fall. Previously the duo worked at the hospitality company, Barter and Shake. The brand has been behind several successful bars in Phoenix including Grand Century and Undertow.
What to expect
The inside of the bar, based on photos from the bar’s social media, is darkly lit with black walls that are adorned with cut outs from magazines. As for the menu, the bar’s owner told the Arizona Republic, “We want to be able to offer really cool cocktails without getting pretentious.” The owner described the interior decor as being dim with ambient lighting filled with black furniture and couches and filled with lots of candles. The new spot in Roosevelt Row will serve a range of cocktails including Palomas, Cosmos, and Pina coladas. Also available are Coors Light, White Claw, hard seltzer, and Four Loko. Olguin described the theme of the bar as simply, “pretty much, we just want to throw a kickass house party.” Additionally, the bar will serve specialty items such as the Montucky Cold Snack beer, a house shot, a ‘snack of the day’ and will also offer $1 cigarettes. For the more traditional minded, classic cocktails will be available as well. The catch? They’re pre-mixed and served by the bottle, keeping inline with the ‘house party’ theme. Beer and wine are served as well.

Killer Whale Sex Club officially opened to the public this this wednesday and is preparing for its first weekend. As previously noted, the owners are not new to the bar scene and this is yet another promising chapter from the team. Earlier this year, Sam Olguin was interviewed by Arizona Foothill Magazine where he revealed that his favorite drink to make is a Darth Vader, and that he would also most like to make a cocktail for Lana Rhoades. He also revealed that his biggest bartending fail was throwing away a coaster with Ariana Grande’s phone number that she gave him.
This weekend marks the official grand opening of Killer Whale Sex Club as the owners welcome members of the community to the new Phoenix bar. To commemorate the opening, the bar will host a front lawn keg party as part of Roosevelt Row’s First Friday event this weekend, March 5th. The bar will be open all weekend beginning each day at 5 p.m. for anyone looking to find things to do to spend their weekend.
