Ojos Locos

Mesa is about to get Loco! Ojos Locos Sports Cantina has finally come to the Valley. Last week, while everyone was busy at costume parties and trick-or-treating, the Dallas based Mexican chain burst onto the restaurant scene in Mesa. Known to many as the ‘Mexican Hooters,’ Ojos Locos is a breastaurant chain catering to Latinos offering a “comfortable and laid back cueva experience” with ‘mas tacos, mas wings y, mas cerveza.’ Like Hooters, Ojos Locos (literally ‘crazy eyes’) is a sports bar which also boasts of having the most “coquetas y bonitas chicas” as servers.

Their waitresses, called simply “chicas”  roam around the establishment in cleavage revealing tops and short skirts well below fingertip length. The new Mesa location for this ‘thirst trap’ restaurant is right on the corner of Alma School rd and US 60, incidentally right across the street from a Hooters. The new Ojos will open in the same spot that used to house Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom which closed in 2018.

In 2010, a group of restaurateurs launched the chain, including Randy DeWitt. DeWitt, is also the owner of the parent company, Front Burner Restaurants and previously founded Twin Peaks, another breastaurant with a wilderness lodge theme. The Mesa location is the 12th location total and just the 2nd outside of Texas with the remaining 10 all inside the Lone Star State.

The restaurant itself is your typical sports bar but with a definite emphasis towards the South West and south of the border style entrees, In addition to your standard burgers and wings, guests can also enjoy chips and queso, sizzling fajitas, and a wide array of their specialty tacos.

Smack in the middle of their menu is the ‘Street Tacos’ section where guests can chow down on any 4 tacos for $9.99 or any 3 tacos $8.99. Toppings include; pork, beef, chicken, and seafood. Lunch is served weekdays from 11 am – 2 pm with specials starting at just $7. On Mondays after 6 pm, those with extra grande appetites, can enjoy ‘all you can eat’ tacos for just $12.99 and on Wednesdays ‘all you can eat’ wings for $14.99.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be a sports bar with sweet happy hour deals. Happy Hour is 2-7 pm Monday through Friday with $3.00 house margaritas, $3.50 mojitos, and $2.99 domestic drafts and $3.99 import drafts. Even if you were just there the night before, Ojos Locos boasts of its own home remedy hangover cure featuring their micheladas paired with their chicken tortilla soup.

For the more adventurous among us or just those who really like beer, Ojos Locos offers beer in 100 oz pitchers called ‘balones.’ Like their sister-chain Twin Peaks, they promise 29°F beer, the coldest temperature possible before ice crystals begin to form.

As guests scarf down tacos and beer they can also enjoy a multitude of HD TVs broadcasting deportes all day with a mixture of Latino and non-Latino sports.

Ojos Locos joins other Mexican hot spots like Barrio Queen as go-to Mexican restaurants in the Valley.
