Kobe

This weekend the world received the shocking and tragic news that NBA legend Kobe Bryant had died in a helicopter crash. Bryant  41, was with his 13-year old daughter Gianna who also perished in the crash along with seven other passengers. The two were reportedly en route to Mamba Academy, the youth sports training facility founded by Bryant where Gianna played on the Lady Mamba basketball team. During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Tonight, Kobe stated that his Gianna’s goal was to someday play in the WNBA.

Gianna loved basketball and was poised to carry on her father’s legacy. Those who watched her play, even at a young age, knew that she had the spark that would have propelled her in the sport. Just recently a video of her and her father went viral on social media. In the video the father and daughter duo can be seen sitting on the sideline at a basketball game as Kobe breaks down the game for his daughter.

Throughout his career, Bryant reached new heights in the sport he spent two decades playing professionally. During his time with the Lakers he won 5 NBA championships, made 18 NBA All-star appearances, made 11 All-NBA first teams, and won two Olympic gold medals with the USA national basketball teams. He was awarded the NBA Finals MVP twice in 2009 and 2010 and won the league MVP in 2008. During his career Brany scored 33,643 points, grabbed 7,047 rebounds, and made 6,306 assists.

In fitting fashion, during his last game, Kobe capped off his career with a 60-point performance against the Utah Jazz on April 13th, 2016.

As news began to spread throughout the League, several teams, in honor of Kobe, began their games by each taking 24 second shot clock violations to pay tribute to his jersey number, 24. During the games played on Sunday, “KO-BE” chants erupted throughout to pay homage. In wake of these tragic events the NBA has postponed Tuesdays Lakers game against the Clippers.

Sunday night, during the Grammy awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Alicia Keys paid a tribute to Bryant in her opening monologue stating, “we are literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built.”

Also on Sunday night, hundreds poured into Newport Ridge Community Square for a vigil as they mourned the loss of Kobe and all of the passengers on the helicopter that passed away.

During his career, Kobe played 87 games against the Suns including 23 post-season games. During those match-ups he scored 2,330 points averaging 26.7 per game. In his last game against the Suns he scored 17 points and grabbed 3 rebounds.

For Bryant’s final game against the Phoenix Suns in Talking Stick Arena on March 23rd of 2016, the Suns put together a touching tribute video to send him off and recognizing his legacy as a player. Perhaps one of his most memorable shots came in Game 4 of the 2006 NBA playoffs against the Suns as Kobe hit the game winner.
