Sushi Sonora is currently located in Phoenix…

Sushi Sonora was established in 2012 and has quickly emerged as one of the premier sushi restaurants in the Valley. What makes Sushi Sonora unique is that is the first ‘Mexican Sushi’ restaurant in the Phoenix area.

The sushi that Sonora uses is straight from the Mexican state of Sonora. Once it arrives in Sonora, it is instantly infused with a flare of Mexican flavor, textures, colors, and culture, giving a truly Mexican spin on a classic Japanese dish. At Sonora, guests are treated to a nice variety of Japanese and American sushi with several meats as well as vegetarian options to choose from. The rolls come dry but Sonora offers three different bottled sauces, One ponzu, one teriyaki type sauce, and a spicy mayo sauce, allowing them to be fully customizable, making this one of the best places for sushi in downtown Phoenix.

What’s on the menu?

The menu offers 15 different sushi rolls including; the Ceviche roll, vegetarian roll, salmoncito roll, the ‘extreme roll’ (Shrimp, cream cheese and cucumbertopped with grated Chihuahua cheese) and the cronchi roll among others. Also on the menu is the ‘Sushi dog roll’ which comes with bacon, sausage, cream cheese, and avocado. Not only does this Mex-Sushi restaurant offer great sushi in Arizona for great prices, they also offer more American options beyond raw fish such as the cheese burger, chicken burger, Japanese wings, boneless wings, chicken nuggets, and Teriyaki bowls. With such a diverse menu it’s easy to see why Sushi Sonora routinely rates among the best sushi in downtown Phoenix.

Top selling items

Currently, among the most popular items on the menu is the Dinamita (dynamite) roll served with tempura shrimp, cream cheese, avocado, crab sauce, wrapped in seaweed. Portions at Sonora are huge for what you pay, giving you the best bang for your buck of most other restaurants offering sushi in Phoenix. Another top seller on the menu is the Percheron roll. Perhaps no other dish at Sonora captures the fusion between Mexican and Japanese cuisine quite as well as this one. Named after the breed of French draft horses, the Percheron roll comes wrapped in tin foil stuffed with carne asada, pollo, bacon, avocado, all held together by a heavy dosage of melted cheese. The roll is a perfect cross between a sushi roll and a burrito.

In addition to the great entrees on the menu, Sonora also offers great side dishes ranging from standard french fries to chili pepper stuffed with crab and seasoned edammaes. On the dessert front, Sonora offers guests; cheese cake, chocolate cake, a slice of apple pie, and chocolate peanut butter caramel crunch bande. While Sonora does not serve alcohol, guests can still get soft drinks, bottled water, Arizona iced tea, and canned sodas. Guests also rave about the sushiles on the menu which consist of chili pepper stuffed with shrimp, cream cheese, and crab mix, all deep fried. Another fan favorite at Sonora’s is the ‘Bomba’ dish which comes with rice, cream cheese, and the guest’s choice of ingredients all breaded and deep fried served on a platter.

While there is no shortage of sushi in Phoenix Arizona, Sonora is the only place that blends traditions from Mexico, The States, and Japan all in one, making a true one of a kind restaurant. Sonora is family owned and because of its originality and unique taste, it has become a staple in a both the Mexican and Japanese culinary scenes in Phoenix. If you’re ever in a bind and can’t choose whether your want sushi rolls or a burrito to eat, pick Sonora Sushi and you can enjoy the best of both worlds. With such generous portions and fair prices, you can’t go wrong with Sonora where you can eat more and spend less while consuming some of the best food in the Valley.

The service is fast and personable and guests who go find themselves coming back many times over, not just for the food but for the exemplary service as well. Sushi can be a hard market, especially in an area dominated by South of the Border style cuisine. Yet Sonora Sushi has found a way to create the perfect atmosphere for both fans of sushi and Mexican.

Today, Sonora has three different locations across the Valley:

Sonora locations 1 & 2 are both traditional restaurants. After four years of success at the first location on McDowell, the family opened up a second location on 32nd street. Finally, they opened up their third spot in the Valley on West Thomas road, Sonora Sushi sports bar and grill. The store on W. Thomas offers a bit more than the other two, with tv screens for viewing games and a full bar to enjoy drinks with friends and family. Sonora’s sports bar and restaurant happy hour deals include: $2 domestic beers, $2.50 imports, $2 margaritas, and $3 micheladas, every day from 3 pm to 6 pm. The Thomas location also hosts weekly ‘Sushi Karaoke’ nights on Fridays from 8 pm to 2 am.
