Living in Phoenix, there are a few expectations; the summers are hot and no matter where you are, you’re never far from amazing Mexican food. In a state that so proudly boasts of its south of the border cuisine, taco shops can seem a dime a dozen. Last month however, a new taco shop arrived in the Valley to shake things up, offering a new flare to the Mexican food scene of downtown Phoenix. The new Taco Boys on Roosevelt Row prides itself on its downtown style and authentic dishes.
Taco Boys is not the most glamorous restaurant in the Valley, but that’s not the aesthetic they’re looking for. What you see is what you get. As soon as you walk in the door, you are instantly greeted by the person standing behind the register, eagerly awaiting to take your order.
What’s on the menu?
Speaking on the menu, Cornejo noted that while everything is good, “we know how to make tacos better than we know how to make anything else.” Indeed, the tacos are the highlight of the menu. In addition to tacos however, guests can also enjoy burritos, quesadillas, vampiros, and platos. Taco Boys also offers bean cups on the side, and fajitas can be added as a side to anything.
With each item on the menu guests get the salad bar and a choice of either Carne Asada (Steak), Pollo (Chicken), Tripa, Cabeza, Pastor, and Barbacoa as protein. When it comes to serving sizes of meat, Taco Boys likes to be generous to all its customers. To make sure all their food is of top quality, all their meat is cooked fresh on a mesquite charcoal grill.
Earlier this month, Arizona Foodie paid Taco Boys in downtown Phoenix a visit. Their experience was markedly positive, proclaiming their tacos, “The food at Taco Boy’s was really good, authentic Mexican food. This was actually some of the best Mexican food I’ve had in the Phoenix area. They give good sized portions for a reasonable price.” The menu also offers both veggie quesadillas and burritos cooked with fajitas and cheese.
Another user on Facebook said of the new taco spot, “This was actually some of the best Mexican food I’ve had in the Phoenix area.” To date, they have a 5 out of 5 rating on Facebook.
What to expect at Taco Boys
As guests eat, authentic Mexican music is played throughout the restaurant, loud enough to pour over into the immediate outside area, creating a nice authentic feel. Additionally, the front door is typically left wide open, adding to the inviting and authentic tone of the restaurant. Priding themselves on quality, the taco shop sources all its ingredients from the most trusted vendors to make sure everything is always fresh no matter the season.
“There’s not really many authentic Mexican places to eat at downtown,” said Carnejo. When asked about the style they’re aiming for, owner Juan Francisco Cornejo said, “You’re not going to find this kind of food unless you go to a food truck on the south side or the west side. Mexican people, they don’t think that this is possible for them. They feel like it’s too much, it’s overwhelming, can they do it, you know what I mean?” Fortunately, Carnejo and his father both used to run a food truck called Tacos Cornejo. They also previously ran El Matador Asadero y Cocina.
Once you’ve ordered your food, rest assured you’re in good hands. The head chef at Taco Boys has over 15 years of experience in authentic Mexican restaurants and promises to provide guests with excellent and 100% authentic Mexican cuisine.
