Editor’s note: As of March 12, 2020 the MLB has officially canceled the remainder of spring training, effective as of 4 pm EST. The regular season will also be pushed back at least two weeks to March 26th. The MLB reached this decision following a phone call with 30 different clubs.
Spring training in Arizona dates as far back as 1929 when Detroit Tigers became the first club to have their spring training in Arizona. Each spring hordes of people visit the Valley to participate in the many festivities centered around spring training. Along with enjoying a hot dog and watching baseball, there are a number of things to do in the area during the spring that visitors can take advantage of. No matter how long you’re visiting for, there’s plenty to do this spring to keep yourself occupied. Whether you’re here for the week, or looking for things to do this weekend, check out these activities and enjoy your stay.
Catch the action of this year’s spring training games
This is by far one of the greatest attractions in Arizona this spring as the baseball. There are numerous sites one can go as a visitor or a local. The State of Arizona has several baseball teams in the Cactus League and their schedules so you can see which of the events you want to book for at your most convenience. There are about 15 teams slated to have their training in phoenix such as Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels, Sand Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, San Fransisco Giants, Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Oakland Athletics. You may even get an early chance to see the local Milwaukee Brewers in action and other matches scheduled to be played in Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The tickets will be very cheap, allowing you to get a chance to meet up with your favorite teams and athletes as a way to spend your spring this year. One of the many other things to do in Phoenix is enjoy the excellent theater scene in the area. One of the best theaters to visit is the Great Arizona Puppet Theater. This is a family-friendly theater that specializes in puppets for both adults and children. There are over 60 shows every Friday and Saturday nights. There is also the famous Phoenix Theater, which is the oldest Theater that dates back to the 1920s. This Theater brings in large and small-scale productions to their stage. Popular titles like Mamma Mia and Little Shop of Horrors are very much common. Another place to visit is the Arizona Theater Company.
